Latest IBO updates for the New Year
New Year, new updates from the International Boxing Organisation
The International Boxing Organization released their monthly newsletter for January 2021, consisting of all the latest stories surrounding the newest governing body in boxing.
Undisputed
Eddie Hearn expects to make an official announcement in February about the date and location for IBO World Heavyweight Champion Anthony Joshua's (24-1, 22KOs) undisputed clash with former IBO World Heavyweight Champion Tyson Fury (30-0-1, 21KOs). Fury's American promoter Bob Arum has revealed that all parties have settled on the location of the fight already.
New signing
Congratulations to IBO World Super Middleweight Champion Carlos Gongora (19-0, 14KOs) on signing a promotional contract with Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing.
IBO President Ed Levine presented 31-year-old Carlos Gongora with his IBO World Super Middleweight title on the undercard of Golovkin vs. Szeremeta on December 18. The Boston-based boxer from Ecuador knocked out unbeaten Kazakh opponent Ali Akhmedov (16-1, 12KOs) in the final round.
The American Dream is back
IBO World Super Welterweight Champion Erislandy Lara (27-3-3, 15KOs) is back in the gym and looking for all of the big names in the division for 2021.
'The American Dream' last fought in August 2020, triumphing over challenger Greg Vendetti (22-4-1, 12KOs), 30 from Massachusetts, to retain his WBA strap whilst adding the IBO belt.
Next Gen takes the next step
Former two-time IBO World Super Middleweight Champion Chris Eubank Jr (29-2, 22KOs), who has dropped back down to Middleweight, would like to fight current two-time IBO World Middleweight Champion Gennadiy Golovkin in 2021. Earlier this month, 31-year-old British boxer Chris Eubank Jr. signed a promotional deal with Team Sauerland.
No more breaks for Harper
IBO World Super Featherweight Champion Terri Harper (11-0-1, 6KOs) is back in trainer Stefy Bull's gym following hand surgery with the 'Road to Undisputed' on her mind. First stop is long-reigning WBA champ Hyun Mi Choi (18-0-1, 4KOs).
Denaby's Harper suffered from a break in her hand after her ninth-round TKO win over challenger Katharina Thanderz in Noveber last year to successfully retain her WBC and IBO world super featherweight belts. All time frames to defend IBO titles were suspended on March 1st 2020 due to Covid-19. These time frames have been reinstated on November 1st 2020.
