Ellie Scotney vs Mea Motu

Ellie Scotney (9-0) puts her IBF, WBO and Ring Magazine World super-bantamweight titles on the line against Mea Motu (20-0, 8KO), who puts up her IBO strap, in Nottingham on January 25, on the undercard of Dalton Smith vs Walid Ouizza.

The quadruple title fight is part of the first event in Matchroom Boxing's UK schedule for 2025, broadcast globally on DAZN.

Fight Preview

Catford's Ellie Scotney was an amateur star before turning pro with Matchroom, winning the 2017 ABA's and competing in the 2018 World Championships.

The 26-year-old south Londoner turned pro in 2020, and debuted on the exact same date as her opponent Mea Motu, on October 17, except they fought 11,000 miles apart. Both won their pro bow on points.

Scotney won her first title in her fourth fight - the WBA Inter-Continental super-bantamweight title. She made history in her sixth fight in October 2022 when she became the first British female boxer to win the European super-bantamweight title.

Scotney became a world champion when she relieved Cherneka Johnson of her IBF World super-bantamweight title in June 2023, winning unanimously with scores of 98-92, 98-92, 93-97., so she has a good record against New Zealanders.

It was in her last fight when she unified her IBF belt with the WBO and Ring titles, by defeating Segolene Lefebvre, which was her only fight in 2024.

Her next opponent Mea Motu is a four-weight New Zealand champion, holding more titles than other female boxer from her country.

As an amateur, she was a five-time national champion, trained by her mother, alongside her sister, Sally, who also won a national title.

She turned pro in 2020 and won her first national title - at lightweight - in her sixth bout. Within 18 months and 12 fights, she had become a four-weight national champion.

Motu won her IBO World title in April 2023 with a unanimous decision over Tania Waters in New Zealand. She's since defended the belt twice, both time via UD in her home country.

Her last two bouts in 2024 were both eight-rounders, which she won by stoppage in rounds two and four, respectively.

Prediction

Motu is probably going to be Scotney's hardest opponent yet. But the Catford girl is so skilful and well-rounded in her ability that I think she overcome anything the Kiwi throws at her.

The home girl Ellie Scotney to win on points, probably another unanimous decision, but closer than any of her other scores.
