Shakur Stevenson vs Devin Haney mega-fight could be next

Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson want to face each other next

Over the last few days, current WBO Welterweight Champion Devin Haney (33-0) has appeared to reach an agreement to face current Super-Lightweight WBO and Ring Magazine Champion, Shakur Stevenson (25-0).

On X, Haney stated that “Me vs Shakur.. is the biggest’ after the WBO’s number one Welterweight contender Keyshawn Davis posted, arguing that a fight between himself and Haney would be “the biggest fight of the year”. Stevenson replied saying “and let me guess I gotta come to your weight class to make the fight happen just because you say so?”

If the Newark fighter were to move up to Welterweight/147lbs, he would be stepping up 7lbs from his current weight class. This would also represent a 21lbs jump from his original weight class, Super-Featherweight/126lbs.

As such, the 27-year-old Welterweight wrote back, saying “Whenever u decide to come to ‘my weight class’ let’s do it” before adding that his intention is to “fight Keyshawn for now”. The Super-Lightweight southpaw simply responded, saying “Will do”. However, the back and forth did not end there.

After a day had passed, Stevenson proposed the idea of a catchweight. He wrote that “144 is fair for two champions in separate weight classes”.

At this weight, Stevenson would have to gain 4lbs instead of 7, while the naturally bigger Haney would have to lose 3lbs.

The 25-0 fighter went on to say that “Floyd and Canelo made one of the biggest fights ever happen at a catch weight,” referencing the 152lb catchweight bout between Mayweather, who worked his way up to Welterweight and Canelo, who was a natural Super-Welterweight.

In a 2013 pay-per-view event they fought for the WBC, WBA and Ring Magazine Super Welterweight titles. Therefore, the already four-weight World Champion may be hoping that the California native puts his WBO Welterweight title on the line.

After this, Haney sceptically responded for the final time, saying “If I come to 144.. we have a fight?”

A few minutes later Stevenson responded with “Yes”.

Although the fight has only been agreed in principle, more mega fights have recently been able to take place. As such, this fight has the potential to be the most significant American pay-per-view event since Gervonta Davis vs Ryan Garcia in 2023.
