Jackson Chauke vs Ricardo Malajika fight breakdown

Jackson Chauke (24-2-2, 15KO) defends his IBO World flyweight title to challenger Ricardo Malajika (14-2, 10KO) on Saturday, March 1, at the Emperors Palace in South Africa.

Champion Chaukewon the IBO belt in January 2024 against British boxer Kaisy Khademi at the York Hall in London, decisioning the home fighter unanimously after flooring the Brit in the first round.

Fellow South African Ricardo Malajika, 26 from Johannesburg, is an IBO World champion up at super-flyweight. He won the title in 2023 against Kevin Luis Munoz at the same venue in Kempton Park, where he also defended it successfully to Briton Marcel Braithwaite and South African Yanga Sigqibo in 2024.

Chauke has the upper hand in experience with 12 bouts more as a professional, clocking up 179 rounds, compared to Malajika's 100.

However, Jackson hasn't stopped any of his last four opponents and has a KO ratio of 62.5%, which is less than Malajika's 71.43%, who has stopped four from his last six foes.

The skilled challenger is aggressive and relentless, but he can also be methodical and technical too, depending on who's in front of him.

Malajika famously forced Adrian Lerasan to quit midway through their 10-round bout two years ago in 2023, with the Filipino shaking his head during the fifth round and walking back to his corner after suffering enough.

Despite his high KO ratio, Malajika isn't hugely powerful, instead its his unceasing pace and pressure that stops his opponents. However, he has dropped and stopped opponents with single body shots before.

He's good at pivoting either side of his opponent to find sneaky angles to exploit, and can switch to southpaw if he feels the need to. His feet are quick and his punches selection varied. He can fight of the front or the back foot.

Chauke, known to fans as 'M3', is a technical, skilled, calculated, patient boxer. He is quick and reactive, with good head movement and sound judgement of range. He likes to dip his head as he comes into range behind a high, tight guard and has a very nice, fluid bounce to his style.

The IBO World flyweight title has previously been held by the likes of Nonito Donaire and Moruti Mthalane.

Tim Rickson, BBN Editor: "The champion, Chauke, appears to be the underdog at the bookies, but I'm more of a fan of his style of fighting than Malajika's. Althought I can see exactly why the challenger is favoured, I just have a suspicion that Chauke could control most of the fight and just about swing the close rounds his way to edge a decision on the cards."
