Undefeated super middleweight David Benavidez takes on Roamer Alexis Angulo in Showtime triple header

Benavidez missed weight during the weigh-in so vacated his title but will still put his undefeated record on the line against Angulo

Undefeated super middleweight David Benavidez takes on once-beaten Roamer Alexis Angulo in the headlining attraction of an exciting Showtime Championship Boxing triple header on Saturday August 22nd.

Benavidez, who became the youngest super middleweight champion in boxing history in 2017 at the age of 20, missed weight at Friday's weigh-in, losing his WBC title on the scale. Although Benavidez cannot regain his title, power puncher Angulo still has the chance to earn the now vacant WBC 168-pound belt with a victory.

The 'Bandera Roja' is a two-time WBC super middleweight champion, having held the title from 2017 to 2018 and again from 2019 to August 2020. As of May 2020, he is ranked as the world's second best active super middleweight by The Ring and the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board, and third by BoxRec.

He also had a remarkable amateur pedigree, fighting on a record of (15-0) during his meteoric rise to world title level, and despite several bumps in the road such as a positive drug test back in 2018, he remains focused on remaining at the very top of his game at super middleweight.

His opponent will be a true test in this bout, posessing a supreme amount of power with a range of damaging shots in his armoury, and the Colombian will be keen to take the vacant belt and rocket his name onto the world stage, with just a single defeat to his name during his professional boxing career.

The fight card also features rising lightweight Rolando Romero taking on fellow unbeaten Jackson Maríñez for the interim WBA Lightweight Title. Plus, heavyweight contenders Otto Wallin and Travis Kauffman clash in the televised opening bout.
