Carl Frampton will earn world championship fight against Jamel Herring with victory over Darren Traynor

Frampton will take on Traynor over 10-rounds at lightweight on Saturday behind closed doors at York Hall, London

Carl Frampton (37-2, 15KOs) will earn a chance to face Jamel Herring for the WBO super-featherweight belt with a victory over Darren Traynor (16-3, 7KOs) tonight live on BT Sport, behind closed doors in Stratford, London.

He must conquer the 'Train Wreck' in order to earn a shot at becoming a three-weight world champion, and fulfill his burning ambition of becoming the most successful boxer in Ireland's history and will want to come through unchallenged during his return to competitive action, with limited time to prepare for his late-replacement opponent.

'The Jackal' has had a hugely top level pedigree, having held the unified WBA (Super) and IBF super-bantamweight titles between 2014 and 2016, and the WBA (Super) featherweight title from 2016 to 2017. He also held the WBO interimfeatherweight title in 2018. At regional level, he held the European and Commonwealth super-bantamweight titles between 2011 and 2014.

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum has confirmed that the Northern Irishman remains on a collision course with a title shot, providing that Herring also gets through his title defence against Jonathan Oquendo next month to set up a monumentous bout in November.

He said: “Jamel Herring will defend his title against Jonathan Oquendo on September 5th. If Jamel is successful and if Carl Frampton is successful on Saturday, I have a date picked out in November when they’ll fight for the title.

“That’s done. Everybody’s on board. One thing I can’t control is the virus, but we’re gonna do that fight in November. It may well be another ‘bubble’ fight, with no fans, and we’ll have to get Carl over to the States to do it. But if both guys win these interim fights, you can count on a world title fight between Herring and Frampton in November.”

Armenian Vahram Vardanyan (21-1-1) was originally scheduled to face Frampton, but travel restrictions in place destroyed that chance and Scotsman Traynor stepped up to the plate instead.

Traynor could prove to be a tricky customer for the 33-year-old, holding a superb jab, counters extremely well and is extremely tough to break down with a superb guard and ability to take heavy damage and still remain involved in heavy exchanges, and take the fight the distance.

Frank Warren also explained how despite being on the cusp of a legacy-defining moment in his career, Frampton could find the fight complex after training to compete against a different style, but remains confident that the warrior will continue to shine with the spotlight back on him once again after a break from the sport with the pandemic uncertainty ongoing.
