South African legend Kosie “KO” Smith has sadly died at the age of 80
The WBC mourns the passing of South African legend Kosie “KO” Smith
The World Boxing Council and its President, Mauricio Sulaimán, expressed their deepest condolences following the passing of one of South African boxing’s most iconic and powerful figures: Johannes Jacobus Adriaan Smith, better known worldwide as Kosie “KO” Smith (31-19-1, 26 KOs).
World title contender Kosie Smith, who passed away on January 15, leaves an irreparable void in the South African boxing community, but also a legacy of unwavering courage and a level of skill that made him a true phenomenon of the light heavyweight division.
A three-time South African national light-heavyweight champion from Johannesburg, Smith defended his crown with a ferocity and pride that made him a sporting idol in his home country.
He had 51 bouts and clocked up 336 rounds, with a fearsome 83.87% KO ratio.
Smith won the South African light-heavyweight title in 1971, then again in 1975, and for a third time in 1977.
In his third time clinching the national title, it was a historical fight because his opponent was a champion of a title that Smith was forbidden to win, so he was crowned the 'Supreme' champion. James Mathatho was the South African Non-White light-heavyweight champion, and he got his revenge in the rematch two months later.
Kosie competed in a 15-round contest in 1976 against Victor Galindez for the Argentine's WBA world light-heavyweight title, but lost on a unanimous decision.
He hung up his gloves after losing twice in 1979, his last ever fight was against an opponent called Ringo Starr! From Zimbabwe, Walter Ringo Starr defeated Kosie Smith on points over eight rounds in February 1979, then later that year, Ringo Starr beat a boxer called Robbie Williams.
The WBC offers its prayers for the eternal rest of a pioneer of South African boxing, a warrior, and a great father.
