Rey Vargas retains WBC crown against Tomoki Kameda

WBC super bantamweight champion Rey Vargas (34-0, 22KO) retained his title with an unanimous decision victory over Tomoki Kameda (36-3, 20KO) on Saturday night, July 13, at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.

Kameda charged forward for all 12 rounds and seemed to hurt Vargas on several occasions, especially with his left hooks. While Vargas was usually in retreat, boxing off the back foot and using his long left jab and straight right as arrow combinations, with occasional uppercuts thrown in.

In the final round, during a clinch, Kameda grew frustrated and hit Vargas twice on the break to be deducted a point.

All three judges scored it the same - 117-110 for Vargas, an eight round to four round margin with the point deduction taken into account.
