Oscar De La Hoya has announced that he will be returnig to the ring once again, after twelve years out of the sport since his last fight, after seeing Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. announce their exhibition bout scheduled for November.
'The Golden Boy' believes that he is more than capable of competing once again, and feels in a superb shape physically despite being on the wrong side of age at 47-years-old.
An opponent and fight date is yet to be confirmed, with uncertainty continuing to cloud the sport as a result of the global pandemic, but the American is hoping to make a return to fighting in the 154-160 pound weight division.
As a boxer, The californian welterweight competed from 1992 to 2008, winning 11 world titles in six weight classes, including the lineal championship in three weight classes. He is ranked as the 13th best boxer of all time, pound for pound, by BoxRec, and is also well-known for his establishment of Golden Boy promotions back in 2002.
With confidence in his own ability once again, De La Hoya told ESPN that he planned to go back into sparring in order to become battle ready, and eager to seize anyone who wishes to challenge him at his target weight.
He said: "It’s a real fight,I miss being in the ring, I love boxing. Boxing is what gave me everything I have today, and I just miss it. The rumors are true, and I’m going to start sparring in the next few weeks, Look, it's been a long time, yes, buut actually my jab feels faster than ever. I have to make sure that my conditioning is perfect, my health is good. And that's going to take place in the next few weeks. So we'll see.
All these fighters are not of the level that was 15, 20 years [ago], all these fighters are demanding so much money, all these fighters are demanding the moon, and they're forgetting that you must train hard, you must work hard. So that's a huge advantage for me because I know what it takes to train hard, I know how to train smart. I know how to fight smart in the ring.
These guys are in it just for the money -- that'll be the big difference. I will fight for the glory, and these guys only fight for the money. And guess what? The glory will always win."
When questioned about any potential opponents being lined up for the monumental return, De La Hoya insisted he remains coy about finding a fight, and will explore options further down the line, after preparation is well underway.
"Now the plan is to compete between 154-160 pounds, I will fight any top guy, any top guy out there."
