Heavyweight prospect Richard Torrez Jr. calls out Moses Itauma for 2026 battle

Moses Itauma (13-0, 11 KO’s) had been hoping to make his return late this year, but with an apparent lack of heavyweights willing to share the ring with the deadly 20-year-old, the young prospect now looks like he will be kept waiting till 2026 before he can lace back up. 

However, he may have found his next dance partner. The also undefeated Richard Torrez Jr. (13-0, 11 KO’s) has revealed to Sky Sports that he would relish the opportunity to test himself against Itauma.

"I won't duck any smoke. I'm here for the action and I want that competition. I want to see who the best heavyweight is. Not just in the USA, not just in the UK but in the world. That's what we're fighting for here," Torrez told Sky Sports.

"We're fighting for the entire planet, let's see who's the baddest man.”

Torrez went on to agree with the fan consensus that many of the top fighters are avoiding the devastating Briton. However, he seems up for the test.

"I really want that fight. I'm here, I'm ready. I think the funny thing is you see all these guys calling out Anthony Joshua, you see all these guys calling out the older guys.

"I'm out here calling out Itauma. I want that fight. Two guys that are in the prime of their careers and working hard to be someone. I think this is the spot and the time to show who's who.

"I really believe this will be one of those megafights that we could have that would really showcase who's here to stay and who's here to be the guy."

Torrez himself has built up an equally impressive resume, with 9 of his eleven stoppages coming within the first half of his fights. 

However, he is yet to be tested to the extent of his rival from across the pond, with Itauma having already shown his skill against the likes of Dillian Whyte and Mike Balogun.

Torrez will next face off against Thomas Salek on November 15, and assuming he comes through unscathed, a 2026 showdown against Moses Itauma could prove to be just what the doctor ordered for boxing fans across the globe.
