Chris Eubank Jr fined hefty amount by the BBBofC for egg-gate
Chris Eubank Jr has been fined £100,000 by the British Boxing Board of Control for slapping Conor Benn with an egg during their press conference last month.
On February 25, Brighton boxer Chris Eubank Jr smashed a raw egg across the right side of rival Conor Benn's face, causing the shell and contents to completely cover his face in a shocking action that has now been officially reprimanded with a huge fine.
Chaos instantly ensued as Essex man Benn raged at Eubank Jr, desperately trying to reach him, but the warring pair had already been pulled apart by security on stage.
Conor's father, Nigel Benn, was alongside him when the attack happened and was close enough to grip Chris Eubank Jr by the neck, but he was also pulled away.
Eubank Jr commented after the raucous had finally died down, "Apparently, egg contamination was the reason for his two failed drug tests, so I contaminated him with an egg."
The World Boxing Council launched an investigation into Benn's failed drug tests back in 2022 and concluded it was not intentional and the adverse findings of clomiphene could have been due to a "highly elevated consumption of eggs."
WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman, criticised Chris Eubank Jr for his actions, saying, “It was terrible.“
The 55-year-old Mexican said, “What a great fight but what I am not happy about is the egg incident. When is a tragedy going to happen when a brawl bursts in a press conference or at a weigh-in? I understand hyping up a fight but there has to be limits.
“The society is hungry for aggressiveness, blood, incidents and all these types of things that make news. If they go and shake hands, then nobody makes news about good sportsmanship but the fight itself should be sensational.
“It was obviously planned by Chris Eubank Jr, I don’t know if his team or anyone else knew about it. I don’t know if the promotion knew about it, but there have been incidents before.
“My father was severely hurt when Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis had a brawl in New York at a press conference. There have been fights cancelled like Riddick Bowe and Larry Donald. It is something that is complicated.”
