Callum Simpson retains British and Commonwealth titles with Steed Woodall stoppage

Callum Simpson (16-0, 11KO) stopped Steed Woodall (19-3-1, 12KO) within five minutes in Sheffield on Saturday night, January 11, live on Sky Sports.

Simpson retained his British and Commonwealth super-middleweight titles with a vicious stoppage win in round two.

The 28-year-old Barnsley boxer was relentless in his mission to stop Woodall. A left hook to body then head, followed by a right uppercut, then an unending flurry of hooks dropped Woodall in the second round.

The challenger from Birmingham got back to his feet, taking his time in doing so. There were a couple of clinches as Woodall smartly held on, but Simpson landed another huge right hook to trap Woodall on the ropes and referee Mark Bates stepped in to stop the fight.

The initial reaction was that the referee's intervention was premature, but the writing was on the wall for Woodall.

It was Simpson's first appearance in the ring since the tragic death of his beloved sister, Lily-Rae, whose name was proudly emblazoned on his shorts.

Aged 19, Lily-Rae was involved in a fatal car accident whilst on holiday in Zante. She was flown to Athens by air ambulance, given emergency treatment and spent 10 days in ICU, but sadly passed away from her injuries on August 21, 2024.

The big brother paid tribute to his sister after the victory.

He also called for his next fight - against Liam Cameron.

"I think every fight , you need to have a dance partner, and what's bigger than [Liam Cameron]. Anyone from South Yorkshire / Yorkshire knows how big that fight would be.

"And that's a fight that, for me, it would be huge. He's a Sheffield lad, I'm a Barnsley lad - South Yorkshire derby, we'll get it on!"
