Amir Khan discusses the potential Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford clash

Having fought both Saul Canelo Alvarez (62-2-2, 39KO) and Terence Crawford (41-0, 31KO), British boxing legend Amir Khan (34-6, 21KO) was in a perfect position to discuss the potential punch-up when asked by Ring Magazine this week.

Mexican megastar Canelo is a four-weight world champion and first-ever undisputed super-middleweight champion in a four-belt era.

Now 34, the 66-bout veteran is known for fighting twice each year on the Mexican national holidays in May and September.

'Bud' Crawford, 37 from America, is a two-weight undisputed champion, but has only fought once a year for the last five years. However, despite the lack of activity, the southpaw has beaten Kell Brook, Shawn Porter, David Avanesyan, Errol Spence Jr., and Israil Madrimov.

Although his last fight, in August 2024, was up at super-welterweight, the Nebraskan would still have to jump up two more divisions to meet Canelo for his WBA, WBC, WBO super-middleweight titles.

Only last summer, 'King' Khan advised Crawford against jumping in weight to fight Canelo, like he did in 2016, but believes he was never the same fighter again after brutally being KO'd by a single punch in round six.

The 38-year-old has since had a change of heart.

Amir Khan told Ring Magazine, "Look, there's weights for a reason in boxing, and even though I've got huge respect for Terence Crawford for showing the balls that he wants to go in the ring and fight a beast like Canelo, but like I said, Canelo maybe Crawford sees something that, you know, other people have not seen against Canelo, which is, like, maybe he's gone past his sell-by-date.

"And maybe Crawford is the guy to catch him at the right time. You know, so let's see. I think it's a brilliant fight, lets see if it happens.

"But like I say, if it does happen then obviously I'm going to support my boy, Terence Crawford, he's a good friend of mine. Obviously, we fought each other, but sometimes you put that to one side, and he shared the training camp with me last time, spent some good time with me, was at his house, always shows love.

"He's one of the best fighters in the world. To go up two divisions is something I did back in the day when I was I the peak of my career, after beating like Devon Alexander and all the big names, so look I wish I'm all the very best and I think he can do it."

Khan was Britain's youngest boxing Olympic medalist when he won silver at the 2004 Summer Games, and went on to become a unified world super-lightweight champion as a professional.
