Roy King Jr passes away 13 months after last fight

Johnson City boxer Roy King Jr. (12-5-1, 6KOs) died Tuesday at a New York health care facility from injuries he sustained 13 months earlier in a fight against Sena Agbeko.

The 42-year-old was a WBC United States Silver super-middleweight champion.

In his last fight on Thursday, January 16, 2020, at the Nashville Fairgrounds Arena, he collapsed after he was defeated over eight-rounds by Ghanaian middleweight champion Sena Agbeko (23-1, 18KOs) and was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

He was listed in critical but stable condition the following day. Both fighters had landed several hard punches throughout the eight-round light-heavyweight bout. Agbeko, a 27-year-old native of Ghana with 18 knockouts from 23 victories, now living in Nashville, knocked King down four times during the contest - once in the second round, once in the fifth, and twice in the final round, just before the final bell sounded.

King got up after the fight and made his way to the corner where he first stood, slumped over, getting cooled off by his trainer. He later sat on a stool and received medical attention before being taken out of the ring on a stretcher and rushed to the hospital, where he slipped into a coma.

The WBC mourned the passing of Roy King Jr. with this statement: "Johnson City boxer Roy King Jr. died Tuesday at a New York health care facility from injuries he sustained 13 months earlier in a fight.
The World Boxing Council and its President Mauricio Sulaimán, offer their deepest condolences to his family and friends for this irreparable loss. Rest in peace!"
