WBC reinstates Serhii Bohachuk as No.1 contender after Jaron Ennis moves up
The WBC has corrected their mistake
The WBC has reinstated Serhii Bohachuk (26-2, 24 KOs) as the number one junior middleweight contender after Jaron “Boots” Ennis (34-0, 30 KOs) announced plans to move up to 154 lbs.
Bohachuk is set to make his ring return on September 13 in a rematch against Brandon Adams on the Canelo Alvarez vs Terence Crawford undercard.
The decision comes after Jaron Ennis replaced the 30-year-old at number one despite having yet to take to the ring at junior middleweight.
Promoter Tom Loeffler quickly appealed the statement, and on August 25, the WBC reinstated Bohachuck to number one, releasing the following statement.
“The World Boxing Council recently received a rating appeal from promoter Tom Loeffler regarding super welterweight boxer Serhii Bohachuk.
“The World Boxing Council Ratings Appeals Committee received and resolved the appeal in compliance with the provisions of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act.
“A boxer’s rating is based on a subjective determination of his relative merits compared to other contenders in the division at the time, as determined by a majority vote of the WBC Ratings Committee.
“While the WBC has complied with its own rules and applicable legal requirements, it is reported that the WBC Ratings Appeals Committee, in addition to the WBC Ratings Committee itself, has reviewed this appeal and granted the requested motion, consisting of an order to reinstate Mr. Bohachuk to the top spot”
After the WBC’s recent decision, a win for the Ukrainian would pretty much guarantee a title shot in the New Year.
The current WBC champion, Sebastian Fundora (23-1, 15 KOs), would appear to be a good matchup for Bohachuk should he succeed against his former foe in September.
The 6’6 southpaw is a tough test for anyone, with his high-volume style a suffocating affair to deal with.
However, he has a questionable chin - suffering a KO loss to Brian Mendoza in 2023. On paper, this is ideal for the Ukrainian WBC #1, whose devastating stoppage power has seen him rack up 24 KOs in just 26 wins.
