Undefeated Ryan Garcia will face Luke Campbell for WBC interim lightweight title

Golden Boy Promotions and Matchroom have reached a deal for undefeated Ryan Garcia to hand Luke Campbell crucial opportunity at interim status

Undefeated Ryan Garcia will now face Luke Campbell for the WBC interim lightweight championship, with Golden Boy Promotions and Matchroom reaching an agreement for the fight to take place in the USA with the date yet to be confirmed.

'The Flash' has been dubbed as the future of lightweight boxing and will hope to remove Campbell from contention, with the southpaw's last outing against unified champion Vasiliy Lomachenko back in August 2019 where he lost via an eleventh-round stoppage, but battled bravely against one of the current pound for pound greats.

The 22-year-old American has a vast amateur pedigree, becoming a 15-time national amateur champion and amassed an amateur record of 215-15, and during his professional career has held the WBC Silver lightweight title since 2019, and is currently ranked as the world's fifth best active lightweight by The Ring magazine, seventh by the Transnational Boxing Rankings Board and tenth by BoxRec.

With the winner set to face WBC champion Devin Haney for the title, stakes will be extremely high for both fighters and Golden Boy president Eric Gomez believes that this will be a huge test for Garcia and could result in defeat, if he does not fully prepare and remain focused.

He told Sky Sports: "We are very excited, this is the type of fight that Ryan wants. This is a real fight. Campbell is a top fighter, he really is. He came close to beating Jorge Linares - the only reason he lost is because of a knock-down early in their fight. He is a legitimate threat, a very good fighter, an Olympic gold medallist. This will test Ryan. If he beats Campbell then he will get a lot of credit".

Hull fighter Campbell believes that he has what it takes to unsteady Garcia and is now ready to take his chance after having a wealth of experience, facing close contests with Jorge Linares and Vasiliy Lomachenko.

He said when asked about the prospect of fighting Garcia and Haney: "It's hard to see what they are about until they have been in the ring with someone of quality who has a good CV. By the amount of fights they have had, I had already beaten two former world champions. Neither of them have fought a former world champion yet. Time will tell". 

The 32-year-old Briton has been around the block throughout his professional career, and his southpaw stance could provide an awkward test for the superb young American, and everyone involved has been keen to see the fight happen for a while including WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman, who has stated:" This is what the world needs now. People need to work together, The WBC fully supports this extension and this fight.
