New York's Alex Vargas readied to continue knockout streak on February 20 in Orlando

Popular Long Island lightweight Alex Vargas is eager to continue his knockout streak on the One For All Promotions, February 20 event in Orlando, Florida. 

Vargas, who is guided by Andre Rozier’s Team Havoc, has been kept active despite the pandemic, fighting four times in 2020 with his last two contests finishing prior to the final bell. 

Vargas discussed his recent knockout victories and his mindset entering 2021. 

He said, “I’m really happy to get back in the ring, and thank you to my father and Team Havoc for being there for me and getting me opportunities again. I’m really excited for the show in Orlando, I love being in Florida and I have a lot of people coming down from New York to support me, so I’m excited to put on a good performance. 

“I’m not saying I’m a concussive puncher, but I can punch. When you fight people who just come to survive it’s hard to get the knockout. My last two fights have been against guys who did come and try and fight, and that’s how I was able to get the knockout. 

“I feel the longer fights go, the more knockouts I’ll get. My style involves breaking fighters down, and the longer the fights go, the better I get. So when I start moving up to 10/12 rounds I feel I’ll get quite a few stoppages and maybe surprise a few people.”

Vargas continues his strides up the lightweight ranks at the Caribe Royale Resort on February 20, and the Long Island native opened up about his hopes for his upcoming fight and 2021 as a whole. 

Vargas said, “I’m grateful to be boxing again and I’m thankful to the team for getting me back in the ring. I’m excited to fight in front of supporters again in a good venue. It’s going to be a good show with some good fighters on the card and it’s nice to be a part of these events. 

“I’m focused on this fight on February 20. I want to put on a good performance and if I manage to get a knockout then that is a bonus. I’m just concentrating on putting on a good performance and I’ve had great help in camp from Chris Algieri so I’m confident I will be able too. Chris is still a world class fighter so spending time with Chris and rounds in the gym with him is priceless for me at this part of my career. Chris still has big fights in him in my opinion. 

“I’d like to win titles in 2021. We all want to win titles and I want to step up and maybe win a title or two in 2021. Lots of things ride on the pandemic but I believe winning a title is realistic in 2021 for myself.”

Topping the Florida event will be undefeated Melissa Oddessa who goes on the hunt for her first world title in just her fourth professional outing. In her last appearance in December, the Brooklyn-born boxer, a nine-time national amateur champion, viciously overcame her unbeaten challenger, Brittany Simms, to become NABF super bantamweight champion. 

Joining Melissa at the top of the card is the highly-rated Brooklyn based pair of Welterweight Ivan Golub and Light Heavyweight Joe Williams.

Also featuring on the card is Brandon Lynch, Giovanni Scuderi, Pablo Valdez, Khalid Twaiti, Cesar Francis, Anthony Soto and Christian Bermudez.
