Denny defeats Dennis in Dudley

It was a triumphant homecoming for Tyler Denny at the Dudley Town Hall, winning every round against the experienced Grant Dennis, headlining BCB Promotions’ ‘Infiltrate’ show on Friday night.

The event name was inspired by the former European middleweight champion’s ring walk track, and as Sean Paul blasted throughout the historic venue, Denny walked down the steps to the same ring he last boxed at nine years ago.

A lot has happened since that night against Christian Hoskin Gomez: a Midlands Area title, an English title and several huge televised bouts. But after a frustrating period on the sidelines waiting for another big fight, the Rowley Regis man took the opportunity to get a run out, and he looked to be unloading that frustration against Dennis, coming out of the blocks firing in the opening round.

The 34-year-old southpaw has always been a volume puncher, and he was whipping in left and right hands to the body in the early stages as Dennis looked to tuck up and get through the initial onslaught.

It wasn’t just an all-out attack, though, as Denny showed some great head movement, dipping under Dennis’s shots and countering with his jab.

There was a controversial moment in the third as Denny landed a hefty low blow that saw Dennis writhe on the canvas in pain. After a couple of minutes of recovery time, the fight continued, with Denny receiving just a warning for the unintentional foul.

It wasn’t a dirty fight by any means, and the two touched gloves and got back to it, with Dennis landing a couple of cuffing right hands that didn’t seem to trouble the hometown favourite. One shot that did get through the guard was met with a loud response from Dennis's corner, which drew a reaction from Denny, who let them know he was just fine.

The early pace was always unlikely to continue as Dennis kept trapping Denny's arms, getting a few warnings from referee Ryan Churchill. A solid body shot in the final round drew a grimace from the Chatham man, but the 42-year-old is one of the toughest men in the game, and he saw out the final bell with the packed-out hall on their feet in appreciation.

The scorecard was a formality, 80-72. Denny knows bigger tests are to come, but this felt like an important step ahead of returning to bigger stages next year.

“Overall, happy with my performance,” said a delighted Denny. “I just wanted to go in there and enjoy it; it wasn’t about having a certain game plan. I’ve just been training hard in the gym, and I want to get back in the mix. I’d like to win my European title back or box George Liddard for the British. I believe in myself and feel great, as good as I have ever been.”

Ben Collins vs Robbie Chapman

Ben Collins is growing both in and out the ring, as the Queensbury Promotions-signed light heavyweight made a successful step up to the six-round distance, easily outpointing veteran Robbie Chapman.

The 21-year-old from Stourbridge had plenty of supporters in the venue, and he looked to impress, throwing some heavy leather in the direction of the ‘Camden Caretaker’.

Always in great shape, it looked as though Collins had gone up another level in his preparation for this contest, and he was getting through the guard of his durable opponent, who has only been stopped twice in eighty-six previous fights.

A crunching body shot in the fourth was followed by two crisp right hands, and with Chapman now in full defensive mode, he tried to switch stance and hold to give him some respite. As the fight drew to a close, it looked as though Collins could have easily managed a longer distance, but it's about steady steps and steady progression as referee Chris Dean raised his arm, confirming the 60-54 win.

Brandon Fells vs Josh Morris

Brandon Fells dealt with his professional debut with the class that he showed throughout his quality amateur career, handling the unpredictable Josh Morris to take a points win.

The 20-year-old from Devon got off to a rapid start, showing a wide variety of shots against the southpaw Morris.

A familiar face on BCB shows, Morris from Wednesbury never fails to entertain and kept referee Ryan Churchill busy with a couple of warnings, but he stayed just on the right side of it with the fight starting to get rough in the third. A solid uppercut in the final round assured Fells the victory and a debut to remember.

Ryan Griffiths vs Liam Fitzmaurice

After back-to-back draws, Ryan Griffiths picked up a valuable win against Liam Fitzmaurice in the show's opening bout. The Midlands Area Featherweight champion cut a frustrated figure after his last defence against Lewis Morris, and whilst Fitzmaurice didn’t have the same credentials as his last few opponents, he did his best to keep the Dudley man honest, landing a few shots of his own and managing to take a round on referee Chris Deanes' scorecard, but the Dudley man rightly got the decision 39-37 and can now focus on a big fight to be announced in 2026.
