Legendary Venezuelan fighter Jorge Linares announces his retirement

Former three division world champion Jorge “Golden Boy” Linares (47-9, 29KO) announced his retirement from boxing at the age of 38, after his intrepid unanimous decision loss against Jack Catterall, in Liverpool, England.

Linares fought to his fourth consecutive loss, reaching the final time every fight, and sixth defeat in his last 10 fights.

After 21 years in professional boxing, between 2002-2023, he won the World Boxing Council featherweight championship, the WBA super featherweight championship, and the WBC lightweight championship over 56 bouts and 366 rounds.

Linares concludes his magnificent and distinguished career with a professional record of 47 wins, 9 losses and 29 wins by knockout, since his debut in December 2002, when he defeated Kyong Soo Chung, in Osaka, Japan.

His entire career he fought proudly, loyaly representing the banner of Teiken Promotions, the company run by Akihiko Honda in Japan.

“This was my last fight, I told my team, I told my wife, my family, that if I lost this fight, I would retire. So I lost and I’m leaving boxing. That’s why I’m very happy as I have accomplished so much.

“I told my team that it was a beautiful fight. Finishing today by decision was a victory for me.”

Linares started boxing at 12 years old and had his first amateur bout at 13. He went on win several Venezuelan National Championships and reportedly ran his amateur record t0 89-5.

In 2002, he boldly left his family in his native Venezuela and moved 9,000 miles to Japan where he made his pro debut at age 17. Later in his career, he moved to London with his wife, kids and trainer Ismael Salas, in 2017.

During his pro career, Linares was trained by Sendai Tanaka (2002-2011), Freddie Roach (2011-2012), Ismael Salas (2013-2018), Carlos Linares and Rudy Hernandez (2018-2023).

The WBC and its President Mauricio Sulaimán wished Jorge much success in his future plans, “What marvelous times you have given us Champ.”
