Gennady Golovkin vs Sergiy Derevyanchenko - who wins?

Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin (39-1-1 35 KOs) believes his clash with Sergiy Derevyanchenko (13-1 10 KOs) will be a classic when they meet for the vacant IBF World Middleweight title on Saturday October 5 at Madison Square Garden in New York, live on DAZN.

Both men stated their excitement for what promises to be a thrill-a-minute battle for the belt that Golovkin used to hold - for three years - and that Derevyanchenko has challenged for.

Boxing News Now asked their panel of boxing experts for their view on who wins the mega-fight:

"I’m going to go with GGG points win (UD) on this one.

I believe Sergiy Derevyanchenko will do a lot better than people think he will. Wouldn’t shock me if he nicked it, as he might have gotten GGG at the right time."

"Golovkin has the chance to become a champion yet again of the middleweight division. I fully expect him to come through it and look to line up the trilogy fight with Saul Alvarez next year.

While Canelo goes up and down the weight divisions, Golovkin is content to remain at middleweight and regain the belts.

Derevyanchenko is a decent opponent, having fought and lost for the IBF title a year ago against Danny Jacobs but his resume is nowhere near the vastly experienced Golovkin.

I think this will be similar to last time out, it’s a chance to make a statement and then make claim to get the Canelo trilogy, the fight that we all want to see. Hopefully straight after Kovalev. Cinco de Mayo, I suspect."

"Style-wise this promises to be a very fan friendly fight while it lasts.

Sergiy Derevyanchenko has a good right hand and he’s good on his feet and finds good angles. He’s busy, a good body puncher, can hit and likes to fight. He was in a real barnstormer in a split decision loss to Danny Jacobs for the vacant IBF belt last year. He reminds me a little of Tony Zale.  Hes 33 which is no spring chicken for a middleweight and though he hasn’t had that many fights he’s been matched quite hard though I’d say he was probably the fresher of the two.

Golovkin is a tried and tested product, he brings a great chin, numbing power, underrated boxing skills and has faced better opposition. Plus, while both get hit Golovkin seems defensively better. Golovkin also has an anvil for a chin and seems to have the heavier hands. All of this points to a Golovkin win maybe around the eighth round maybe on points but at 37 who knows when father time might come knocking for Golovkin.

Will Derevyanchenko try to box or gamble and go for broke? If the former then maybe a late Golovkin stoppage or a closer than expected decision, if the latter then I’d guess at a mid fight Golovkin stoppage though I think it could be wild while it lasts."

"I  believe this is a hard fight for Golovkin and that if he has dropped standards or under performs then he could lose.

However,I am a big fan and do not go with the theory going round that his level has dropped and therefore believe he will win – late stoppage. He is my kind of fighter!"

"I'm a huge Golovkin fan and will be expecting him to win, but what with his advanced age and signs of slowing down in recent fights, I think this is 50-50.

If you want to be pragmatic about it then Derevyanchenko took Daniel Jacobs to a split decision, a knockdown potentially costing him the win, and Golovkin's fight with Jacobs, despite ruled as a UD, also went to the wire. Two-and-a-half years later, aged 37 with two hard fights against Canelo, is 'GGG' there for the taking now? Possibly, but I will still back Triple G to win by knockout."
