Errol Spence Jr vs Shawn Porter - who wins and why?

Welterweight stars collide in Los Angeles when IBF Champion Errol "The Truth'' Spence Jr. clashes with WBC Champ "Showtime'' Shawn Porter in a massive 147-pound title unification match on FOX Sports Pay-Per-View at Staples Center.

Boxing News Now asked their panel of experts for who they think wins the unification battle:

Ryan Walsh
British featherweight champion

"I can’t see past Errol here, I expect Porter to do Porter and give it absolutely everything, but Errol is just a touch better at everything around the board.

Errol points for me."

Robbie Davies Jr
British super-lightweight champion

"I've got to go with Errol Spence, high boxing I.Q and massive for a welterweight and big puncher. Shawn Porter is also strong and will bring the fight to Spence I have no doubt with serious pressure. But I feel that down the stretch Spence will take over and win on points."

Petr Petrov
Two-time world title contender

"I think Spence wins by decision."

Raza Hamza
Unbeaten featherweight prospect

"Errol Spence is massive for the weight category and is coming within his own. However Porter is strong and has been fighting at world level for a long time. Having said that I believe Spence wins a gruelling fight on points, Porter will have his moments but I think size will make a difference.

It will be a points win for Errol Spence maybe late late stoppage or Porter’s dad stopping the fight."

Tim Rickson
Sports Agent

"Shawn looks like a new man and talks like one too. He has no doubt approached this fight with more hard work than probably any of his previous fights because there's so much at stake. However, I think that Errol Spence Jr is a skill level above him right now.

I think Spence wins this match on points. Boxing IQ and size and strength advantage will tell eventually."

Bolu Kareem
Middleweight debutant

"Errol spence for me, he is the better all-round fighter, has serious boxing skills as well as tremendous punch power.

Shawn Porter is also a very serious fighter but Errol spence takes this one for me."

"Spence really is the truth. The toughness and grit he showed against Kell Brook, along with the skills he demonstrated against Mikey Garcia, are snippets of a potentially special fighter. Is it possible to frustrate him? Yes, we saw Brook outbox him at times, but Shawn Porter isn't Kell Brook. Porter is probably the best pure athlete Spence will have faced but I doubt Porter will be the explosive, aggressive fighter he usually is once Spence gets into his rhythm. Spence will take everything Porter has to offer and stop him in the last quarter of the fight."

Monty Ogilvie
Celtic featherweight title contender

"Spence all day. Porter is game and very talented himself. I just think Spence has too many dimensions to his game and is also huge at the weight so won't be out-muscled. Going to go out on a whim and say Spence wins via late stoppage."

Steve Wood
Promoter at VIP Promotions

"I think Errol Spence will win this and then hopefully set up a fight with Terrance Crawford which is possibly the best fight in the world at the moment and one I certainly would like to see. Shawn Porter is definitely world class but I think Errol Spence is in the elite category, cannot see a stoppage but a comfortable points win."

Kieran Gething
Welsh super-lightweight champion

"I’ve got Spence as a definite winner for this. I think he’s too big and strong and I believe Porter has reached his ceiling!

Spence has real potential to be the unified welterweight champ!"

Ben Day
Southern Area super-lightweight champion

"I like them both but for me I’m picking Spence.

For years and years I’ve been saying how technically good and talented he is, I believe he will be a future Hall of Famer."

"I’ve got to say, this sort of fight being made does put some others such as Khan and Brook to shame. Porter vs Spence will be a great fight for the fans and kudos to them and the management for making it happen.

I do think Spence will be a little too classy so I’m going for a Spence win on points, unanimous."

"I fancy Spence to be too good against Porter. Spence is rightfully in the talk as a pound for pound candidate and is a level above Porter.

Porter will give it a good go but I see Spence winning by 7th round stoppage. His last fight against Garcia was the first time he went the distance since 2014 and I think he will want to get back to stopping opponents.

Porter on the other hand has been to the scorecards in last three fights with last kne against Ugas being a split.  Spence is just another level unfortunately for Porter."

"Porter is a relentless pitbull of a fighter who'll be applying the pressure, aiming to maul his man on the inside early doors. Porter's got a solid engine but I just don't know what else he possesses over Spence that sways me to back him.

Spence is slick and neat, and he could pretty much get on the back foot and fence off Porter all night with his jab. But, who knows? Presently, boxing is full of upsets. That said, I'm going with Spence for the points win or late stoppage."
