On February 20, the super featherweight champion of the World Boxing Council, Miguel Berchelt, encounters the most difficult test of his career thus far, when he faces the mandatory challenger of the division, Oscar Valdez Fierro.

There are countless special ingredients and spice that surround this fight. Both men were among the first members of the Ring Telmex Telcel team, an initiative of the Carlos Slim Foundation that emerged with the reinforcement and intention to support top young boxing prospects. So now with this ingenious support from “The Engineer,” both fighters are completely evolved and developed.

 Even though “Alacrán” is considered by many as the favourite, he trains stronger and more determined than ever,  with the avowed aim of continuing his historic destiny, by defeating the best rivals in one of the most iconic divisions for Mexican boxing.

 

Miguel Bercelt vs Jonathan Barros

On June 23, 2018, Berchelt strode back to his beloved Yucatan, the place where he began his brilliant boxing career. That night was a total fiesta for the people of the region,  as they watched their prodigal son ably defend his WBC super featherweight crown for the third time via TKO in the third round.

Six months after his last fight, Berchelt declared himself ready to face his mandatory commitment. That night he faced the tough fighter from Ciudad Juárez, Miguel Román. True to his all out attack style, “Mickey” unleashed a blistering onslaught. Skilfully and artfully, Berchelt resisted everything and got the best of a give and take war.  Roman would was unable to resist the champion’s immense and accurately wielded power. He was overcome in the ninth round via TKO.

 

Miguel Berchelt vs. Francisco Vargas

On May 11, 2019, Mexico was preparing to underline another chapter of war between worthy fellow citizens. Berchelt had been crowned champion, surgically removing Vargas` firepower.  “Bandido” arrived highly motivated to win back the crown. The fight did not disappoint the fans and it was a true slugfest. Once again, the champion’s strength was unendurable, and he served up to a bloodied Vargas his second loss as a professional fighter. It was halted by the timely and merciful intervention of the referee.

 

Miguel Berchelt vs. Jason Sosa

The world champion accomplished  the sixth defence of his super featherweight crown with an impressive fourth round TKO over former world champion Jason Sosa at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California. Berchelt dropped Sosa twice in the second round, then constantly punished him with powerful punches. “Alacrán” knocked down Sosa again in the fourth round. The fight continued and Berchelt  lambasted  Sosa until his corner wisely and mercifully decided to stop the fight.

 

Miguel Berchelt vs Eleazar Valenzuela

In a non-title fight held in June 2020, Miguel Berchelt shed a light coating of ring rust, deposited by the corrosive Covid-19 pandemic. The champion returned to the ring after almost eight months without fighting, and he did so in patient calculating style by knocking out Eleazar “Tronco” of Valenzuela in six rounds. A rival who  galantly distinguished himself with courage and resistance, that was gradually chipped away.
