Joseph Parker's team call Oleksandr Usyk's injury into question as they continue world title chase
Is Usyk ducking Parker?
Oleksandr Usyk (24-0, 15 KOs) recently requested an extension to the WBO deadline for a mandatory bout against New Zealander Joseph Parker (36-3, 24 KOs).
The extension is said to be due to injury; however, any further details have yet to be disclosed.
Parker is overdue for a title shot, having put together a string of impressive victories, with notable wins over Deontay Wilder and Zhilei Zhang.
Usyk has never been one to duck a fight, though a recent video has thrown the severity of his injury into question, with the heavyweight king filmed dancing at a music festival.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Parker's promoter, David Higgins, commented on the recent video with scepticism.
“I haven't actually seen the medical evidence, but you would think that a serious injury would prevent that sort of activity.
"As far as I'm concerned, things are exactly as they were. In boxing, nothing surprises me.”
Usyk and Parker originally had 30 days from July 24 to agree to terms before a purse bid commenced.
An injury to a hand wouldn't necessarily prevent Usyk from taking part in the concert; however, with details being kept under wraps is understandable why 'Lupesoliai La'auliolemalietoa' and his team are growing restless.
“Joseph just wants to fight, and so he's waiting to fight," said Higgins.
“He is focused, prepared and ready to fight anyone, anywhere, and he's waiting for that to land.”
At the age of 33, the New Zealander’s time at the top is likely running out, and after clawing his way back to the top of the heavyweight rankings, the Usyk fight is shaping up to be one last chance for Parker to cement his name in boxing's history books.
Hiigins stressed that his man is keen to get back into the square circle as soon as possible, with Usyk’s team yet to comment, an interim fight is looking increasingly likely
