Hughie Fury apologises to crowd after fight stopped suddenly in first round

Cousin of Tyson Fury, Hughie Fury (31-3, 18 KOs), fought in the Netherlands on Saturday night, November 30, defeating Michael Webster via technical knockout in the first round.

Signed to GBM Sports, heavyweight Hughie Fury apologised after his latest opponent Michael Webster (10-4, 6 KOs) retired just moments into the scheduled eight-round bout.

His opponent from Middlesbrough signalled to the referee that he could not continue, and the contest was over within one round.

It ended soon after an entertaining opening minute of the match in Rotterdam. Both fighters traded punches, and Fury quickly began to get the better of fellow Brit, Webster. However, an eye injury brought an early conclusion to the contest, so Fury had his hand raised.

Webster seemed game before the abrupt, bizarre ending.

The 31-year-old from Stockport apologised during an interview inside the ring for not putting on much of a show for the crowd. World title contender Fury has now won eight consecutive contests since being beaten by Alexander Povetkin when fighting for the vacant WBA International title in the summer of 2019.

He bounced back by beating Christian Hammer, Mariusz Wach and Pavel Sour in his next three fights. However, he did not fight for another two and a half years, withdrawing from a scheduled match with Michael Hunter in 2022 on the advice of doctors.

Hughie dealt with various health issues during his time out, including acne conglobata, coeliac disease and long Covid. The former British champion returned in April 2024 and has been refreshingly busy, fighting six times over the last 18 months.

Eight years after challenging Joseph Parker for the WBO title, Fury still has hopes of contending for world titles again. Earlier this year, he remarked, "I've been constantly in the gym, and I'm coming for all these so-called top heavyweights soon.

"They can't avoid me much longer, and I'm going to spoil their day in the sun. I'm going to be busy this year, and whoever wants it can have it. Call my team – I will be there!"

He has fought twice this year, also beating Dan Garber at York Hall in April. Fury was actually busier last year, fighting Christian Thun, Patrick Korte and Kostiantyn Dovbyshchenko, all in the space of six months.

Fury remains adamant that big fights will be coming in 2026, but it's been a while since he fought any notable names.
