Claudio Squeo shares details of horrific injury from Jai Opetaia fight

Claudio Squeo's adventure in Australia was an unfortunate but great one.

The 34-year-old Italian warrior, Claudio Squeo (17-1, 9 KOs), from Molfetta departed for Australia knowing he would have to challenge the formidable, undefeated IBF world champion, Jai Opetaia (28-0, 22 KOs).

Brave Claudio was never afraid; he's a guy used to confronting life head-on, not skirting around it. Opetaia was superior in every aspect: height, weight, and he had around 6,000 loyal fans who fill the venues where he fights, and on Saturday night, there were even more at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, Broadbeach in Queensland, Australia.

The bookmakers in Sydney were willing to pay eighty times the stake on the eve of the fight if "The Red Bull" won. But Claudio wasn't much interested in these odds; he just wanted to get into that ring and fight the IBF titleholder. Once he stepped over the ropes, the clamorous and hypnotic roar supporting Opetaia didn't even faze him. Before leaving, he had said: "After all, Opetaia has two hands, just like me."

Even before the first bell, the champion's physicality, height, and sheer physical presence were menacing, yet Claudio was there, ready to play his hand.

Unbeaten Opetaia hit hard, and the challenger gritted his teeth and responded. In the second round, Squeo even pushed the southpaw from the Gold Coast into the ropes. The Molfetta native, known for preferring a sabre to a foil, exchanged blow for blow, but the Australian southpaw was a true fighter. His short right uppercut began to inflict damage, first to the body, "then up high too."

In the fourth round, a body shot from the champion forced Squeo to his knee. Fate whispered to the Italian warrior, "You cannot withstand the storm." The fifth round was brutal. Opetaia pushed Claudio into the corner and hit him with a right hook that fractured his jaw, ending the match.

The Italian team's silence was deep, heavy with worry. Hours of tension passed at the hospital, but Squeo is a rock, so much so that the next day he wrote:

"I just came out of surgery to fix the two fractures I sustained in my jaw during the match. The operation went very well. I'm fine!
