All you need to know ahead of Canelo Alvarez's first fight of 2021 against Avni Yildirim

Unified super-middleweight king Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez (54-1-2) returns to the ring after just 10 weeks out to face WBC mandatory challenger Avni Yildirim (21-2). Canelo won the WBA Super and vacant WBC belts with a UD win over Callum Smith.

Here is all you need to know ahead of the huge world title clash live on Saturday night globally:

Date:

The fight takes place on 27th February 2021. Canelo makes his return to the ring, with his last fight having been a comprehensive unanimous decision victory over Callum Smith back in December, as he prepares to embark on a four fight year.

Venue:

It takes place at  Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, Florida.

Background

Yildirim spent most of his career in Germany but is mostly known for his KO loss to Chris Eubank Jr in the World Boxing Super Series tournament and his technical decision loss to Anthony Dirrell in 2019. He’s got some athletic qualities, but is extremely limited technically. 

Meanwhile this should be a good victory and boxing masterclass for Canelo and hopefully set up bigger fights for Canelo down the line. As long as he gets over the line against a significantly weaker opponent on paper, it appears  Billy Joe Saunders seems like the confirmed opponent for the real challenge on the cinco de mayo main event match-up.

I just simply cannot give Yildirim a chance in this one with the far more elite boxer and all round fighter being Canelo Alvarez in this one, and he will no doubt be at his world class best to try and easily take his opponent out of there early on and set up a huge super middleweight clash with Billy Joe Saunders who is likely to be in the stadium.

PREDICTION: CANELO ALVAREZ STOPPAGE ROUNDS 3-5
