Caleb Plant predicts his own chances against Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez compared to Billy Joe Saunders

'Sweet Hands' believes discipline is key to defeating Canelo Alvarez

Caleb Plant has revealed why he is confident of defeating Canelo Alvarez if the fight is made for later in 2021, and believes that he can go one step further than Billy Joe Saunders.

The American believes that he is more 'disciplined and serious' about the fight than Billy Joe Saunders, despite the Briton boxing impressively in the early rounds before retiring to defeat against the pound-for-pound king.

He also stated on the PBC podcast that the Mexican superstar would have a much greater difficulty in defeating him in a super-middleweight clash in September.

'Sweet Hands' said: " “Well, for one, I feel like, you know, I take this sport a lot more serious. “We’ve heard Saunders even, you know, tell on himself, saying that he doesn’t train when he doesn’t have fights coming up and, you know, that maybe he doesn’t live the best lifestyle. And anyone who knows me knows how serious I take my training. They know how disciplined I am. They know how much I respect this sport and how much work that I put in this sport.

So, you know, I feel that’s a big difference-maker, on top of I feel, you know, I’m a lot faster than Billy Joe, my defense is a lot better, I punch harder than Billy Joe, I’m taller than Billy Joe. I feel like people sometimes misconstrue that just because maybe we both have a slick style, they think that we fight the same. But that doesn’t necessarily mean that we fight the same. You know, he doesn’t have a good jab. I mean, there’s a whole list of things I feel like I do better.”

Saunders was forced to retire in the contest, as he suffered multiple fractures to the orbital bones surrounding his right eye in the eighth round, but was not too far behind on the judge's scorecards going into the later rounds.

Eddie Hearn has since revealed that Canelo could fight for the fourth time this year, with talks beginning between his camp and Plant's team to make the super-middleweight fight happen potentially in late September.
