On February 20, 2021, Oscar Valdez (28-0, 22KOs) will try his utmost to make history,  by conquering in his second division. He is now an integral part of the exceptional Team Reynoso directed by the successful trainer Eddy Reynoso, on via to facing one the most accomplished and resolute champions of today - Miguel Berchelt (37-1, 33KOs).

There are a fascinating array of appetizing ingredients that surrounds this highly and keenly anticipated fight. Both fighters were among the first members of the Ring Telmex Telcel team, an initiative of the visionary Carlos Slim Foundation, which emerged with the specific aim and investment,  of supporting, nurturing and developing top young boxing prospects to realize thier full and ripe potential fruition.

Beside every successful Mexican fighter is an innovative and resourceful coach - Berchelt with is with Alfredo Caballero, while Valdez trains with Eddy Reynoso.

Although the experts deem the current champion to be the clear favourite, the former Mexican Olympian, possesses an abundance of courage, plus a burning hunger to prove he is indeed one of the finest fighters of the moment; just look at his last five fights to confirm this premise.

 

Oscar Valdez vs. Scott Quigg

On March 10, 2018, Valdez was looking to make the fourth defence of his featherweight title. His rival was Scott Quigg, at that time had only had one loss in his career (against Carl Frampton via split decision). Although the fight was always going to be an exacting test, the level of difficulty increased multifold,  when Quigg did not make the weight and came with a 3 pounds advantage into the fight. Valdez did not want to disappoint his fans and stepped into the ring. Quigg took advantage of his greater weight causing serious damage to the champ´s jaw. Valdez had to work extra hard to get the victory. Although Oscar had a comfortable and uncomfortable win, he had to endure one of the toughest tests of his career, as he fought with a broken jaw for most of the night. It proved his true grit.  

 

Oscar Valdez vs. Carmine Tommasone

After a long recovery from the injury to his jaw, Valdez would return to the ring almost a year later to defend his feather crown for the fifth time. On this occasion,  he faced the unbeaten Italian, Carmine Tommasone. After his last fight, Oscar understood that it was time to upgrade and refine his style in order to exploit and utilize his latent defensive qualities, while maintaining his aggressive style. This was his first fight alongside Eddy Reynoso. Valdez would take the victory with a spectacular KO in the seventh round.

 

Oscar Valdez vs. Jason Sanchez

On June 8, 2019, 4 months after his last fight, Valdez came back to the ring to defend his featherweight crown for the sixth time. He was combatting an intrepid challenger and undefeated fighter, Jason Sanchez. With greater adaptation and subtle understanding engendered by his team, Valdez would achieve a comfortable victory by unanimous decision.

 

Oscar Valdez vs. Adam Lopez

On November 30, 2019, Valdez embarked upon the super featherweight division quest to face Andrés Gutiérrez; however, in what was an unusual moment in boxing history, the fight would be cancelled as Gutiérrez ambled in weighing more than 10 pounds over the category limit. So, Adam López would step up to welcome Oscar to the super featherweight division. in a harsh introduction, Lopez hit Valdez hard in the second round to send him to the canvas; nonetheless, true to his style, Valdez would dig deep, securing the  victory in round 7.

 

Oscar Valdez vs Jayson Velez

On July 21, 2020, in what was an atypical period marked and scarred by the pandemic, Valdez would arrive at the MGM bubble in Las Vegas to face the tough Puerto Rican warrior, Jayson Velez. With  mettle and armoured fighting style, developed alongside Eddy Reynoso. Valdez would gain this victory via TKO in the tenth round.
